Octan operates in nearly every Lego country and is one of the most valuable brands in the world. The corporation's global headquarters are in Davidium, the capital of the Empire of Legoland, which has led critics to label the energy giant as a vector for the Empire to advance its interests. Octan's wealth and near-monopoly of the energy industry in many parts of the world has allowed it to lobby and arm-wrestle governments into doing what it wants. These practices have bred resentment, especially in the Lego Republic.
In a televised address, President Bricks declared that nationalizing the Lego Republic-based division of Octan was vital to national security and national pride, as well as reducing economic disparity.
"For too long, Octan has served the interests of its corporate bosses and the corrupt government of Legoland, not its customers. For too long, Octan has used electricity, gasoline, and heat –all basic rights– as leverage to force legitimate governments to bend to its will. For too long, Octan has neglected its corporate responsibilities while Lego Republic taxpayers pick up the slack. This ends today," said Bricks.
In a statement released to the media, Minister of Commerce Gérard Lafayette supported the president's reasoning.
"We were considering an anti-trust suit against Octan but decided that nationalization would be a better option for the citizens of our country. Petroleum resources within Lego Republic borders should be managed by the Republic to better serve our citizens' needs," said Lafayette.
Octan primarily sells petroleum and natural gas. In recent years, the company has expanded into renewable energy, chiefly windmills and solar panels, although Octan still reaps the vast majority of its profits from nonrenewable sources. Octan owns rich petroleum resources, some of which are in Lego Republic waters; it is predicted that nationalization will be followed by expansion of offshore drilling in the Legolantic Sea, west of the Republic's outlying islands.
